Tre @Trespeak

hey fediverse, I'm a journalism student in college and I'm interested in writing a story about Mastodon for a class -- any power users or instance admins out there that would want to talk about the platform and what makes it unique?

@Trespeak The mascot

I run a single-user instance and am currently tracking the spread of Mastodon itself. Happy to contribute to your story!

@Trespeak
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Mastodon, is in fact, OStatus/Mastodon, or as I've recently taken to calling it, OStatus plus Mastodon. Mastodon is not an social network unto itself, but rather another instance of a fully functioning OStatus microblogging platform made useful by open-source licensed, freely developed protocols, and vital system components comprising a full microblogging standard as defined by W3C.

@Trespeak happy to answer questions. I understand pretty well how things fit together around here in the #fediverse

@Trespeak i'm guessing you got lots of responses, but if you need anyone i can help

@Trespeak I run a couple instances and would be willing to chat. DM me.

@Trespeak Why would you only talk to admins and “power users”?

I feel that the most unique thing about Mastodon is that we have diverse communities that manage to engage (for the most part) in respectful discourse. Focusing on the technologically-savvy misses a good part of that. :)

(And yes, I think that's an answer :P)

@kellerfuchs A fair and valid point! I think I was honestly just looking for people to talk to and wasn't sure how to phrase that. ☺️

@Trespeak I kinda guessed, but it still made for a good way to jump in. (Also, deconstructing tech-ethnocentric assumptions is good.)

@trespeak CHANGE YOUR MAJOR. DO IT BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.
EASIER TO GET A JOURNALISM JOB WITH A MARKETING DEGREE.

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
@rw @trespeak Most journalism these days is native advertising of some form anyways.

@cyberpotato @Trespeak @rw

Heck, you don't even have to be a journalist to post native ads. You can just give the company access to a form for posting their own "content" :)

@Trespeak I have tried to help out new users a bit by explaining how the federation works. Love to help you too.

You can ask anything of me.

@Trespeak I'd be happy to comment if you need more voices. I'm running a humble personal server as a pet project, but hoping to deploy it to a kubernetes swarm :)
