When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,
"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes
I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."
I hate when slimeballs like this take legitimate #FOSS applications and turn them into something nefarious for monetary gain.
I also crap on #Microsoft for not having removed these applications from their store even after they were reported by the original developers. 💩👎💩
I never thought in my life that I'd have to run #antivirus on my television. 🙄 Give me a dumb television....or rather, give me a television that follows the #UNIX philosophy: do one thing and DO THAT ONE THING WELL! 💥 📺 #samsung #qled #smartTV
I see the racist, misogynist "we just want to point out how easy it is to spam on Mastodon" concern trolls are back in action. (If they link to a site called "women are stupid", that's them.)
Remember: don't engage them. Report them, pass the report through to the remote instance if need be, block them, and move on.
Just watched one of the #WWDC19 talks about APFS/ASR and wow.
APFS is basically Apple's version of ZFS.
A year ago I tried learning ActivityPub, and more or less failed. I was confounded by a spec that was so abstract I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Turns out I was missing some key things.
I have written a guide to learning about ActivityPub that I wish existed a year ago when I first set out to learn how to write social media servers that conform to the spec:
For years I saw this car in my neighborhood, assuming its owner simply attached some pre-printed ornamental foil.
Then one day recently, I saw this young lady squatting in front of it, edding marker in hand, carefully adding line for line.
And I realized: the whole sprawling floral madness of sea-horses, algae and jellyfish is completely handmade!
Kudos, unknown neighbor – this is what determination looks like.
There seems to be a renewed interest in #gopher lately. I'm interested too, of course. My main concern with it right now is that there's no real standard for using it over TLS without some kludge.
Even most modern IRC servers natively support TLS connections, with a de facto standard port 6697. Some even support STS. I think these would be good things for gopher (and any other modern protocol) to standardize on as well.
What's the state of the Xbox One controller's trigger rumble on PC? Trying to decide between that, the PS4 controller (Dualshock 4), or something else. I think it's a really neat idea, but if nothing supports it I won't factor that in.
How about the Switch Pro Controller's HD Rumble? I could see paying more for that, but again, not if nothing supports it.
I like how the pride flags on Wikimedia Commons are hand-written SVG. This is the entirety of the trans pride flag:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 800 480"> <path fill="#5BCEFA" d="M0 0h800v480H0z"/> <path fill="#F5A9B8" d="M0 96h800v288H0z"/> <path fill="#FFF" d="M0 192h800v96H0z"/> </svg>
"Straight pride" hot take
So I've seen #StraightPride pop up a few times this weekend. I'm like, "Bro, check your privilege and step off. Maybe call me back after you get assaulted for holding hands with your girlfriend on the bus and the police tell you to not be straight, then." Like, just be happy this isn't a fight you have in life. #pride

The Equality Act has passed the House of Representatives! 7 dems did not vote (???), and 8 republicans voted in favor of it (!!!).
Equality Act amends the Civil Rights Act to add sexual orientation & gender identity as protections from discrimination with regards to housing, employment, etc.
Now it goes to the republican-controlled senate, and if it somehow passes there, it goes to Trump. i don't think it'll go further but WOW
