#UnitedKingdom #UK people of Mastodon... What's your view on a second #Brexit referendum?
I'm in two minds about it. Being a remainer, I want another one. At the same time I'm scared that it would strengthen the toxicity surrounding brexit.
So then, I pivot to not wanting another one and going for the softest brexit possible.
But then I worry we're just going to approach the same issues all over again.
Am I overstating the issues here? Would another referendum be a good idea? #politics
@DatTux We need another one. The campaign was illegal, the result advisory
I'm a USAian not British but I'll give my two pence if I may.
I was always anti-EU until Brexit. I saw EU as autocratic and inefficient. However Brexit changed my mind. If Europe breaks up it will be like the situation where the consensus of the Congress of Vienna collapsed leading to the Great War. The Balkans on a grand scale.
Britain doesn't have such a thing as legislation by popular referendum so its very confusing why even the Labor party seems to feel bound by it. Vote again.
@hhardy01 I completely agree, but would you be concerned about a razer thin remain majority?
I feel like if we have another referendum we'd absolutely need a clear remain majority (however anti democratic that may seem to say!) if we dont want to further empower the leave campaign.
I'd feel better staying with a thin majority than leaving with a thin majority on a vote taken years ago which was influenced by blatant lies such as about the NHS and all the Cambridge Analytica/SCL Group mindfuckery.
@hhardy01 You make a good point there. Thats some food for thought for sure...
@DatTux two things I try not to talk about - religion and politics. Sorry. ๐
