The federated nature of Mastodon means it a giant different moderation strategies interacting with the same wider federation. Gonna be hella interesting seeing how it plays out.
@Ciara I do wonder how people will start organizing themselves. It might end up being an interesting look at self-governance in a digital context.
@trainingmontage it's going to be a fun ride
@Ciara Still in the intro: "the 'habitus' of possessive individualism - those deeply internalized habits of thinking and feeling about the world that develop when people who become accustomed, even without realizing it, to viewing everything around them primarily as actual or potential commercial property."
@Ciara "It is also a reflection on the very nature of hierarchy, it's most elementary building-blocks, and about how forms of resistance as subtle as foul language, merrymaking, and apparently dubious personal hygiene habits simultaneously challenge and reinforce it."
@trainingmontage :pray_tone4: that's highly relevant to my current interests! Serendipity :)
@Ciara Which interests are those?
@trainingmontage I started working on a dystopian feminist novel to destress after work.
@Ciara Oh, cool! Reading widely definitely helps to fill up the tank of imagination for creative output.
@trainingmontage yeah exactly. I say 'working on' rather than 'writing' because I quickly realised I have to do a ton of reading to develop my thinking on what I want to explore!
@trainingmontage I followed you because of I saw your post about your pre-Fred artist's routine and then ended up talking about a book on the nature of hierarchy, which is something I have been thinking about a lot lately. That's serendipity! Which is a theme I have also been thinking a lot about recently :grinning:
@Ciara Have you read at all about the YPG/YPJ in Syria or about Social Ecology? It sounds like your interest in hierarchy would be well fed with those subjects.
@trainingmontage Not yet :)
@Ciara Here's a good introductory interview (a little under 1/2 hour long).that goes over some of what's been happening in Rojava. Would love to talk about more if it's of interest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_KTvx8AnFU
@trainingmontage hey thanks that was super interesting. I didn't know anything about it but will definitely start following developments.
@Ciara The best part is because each instance can choose which instances it connects to hopefully this won't become a major problem of policy.
@Ciara it will also be crazy to read everything that people toots when network grows up a little more
@johann it's kinda crazy now :joy:
@Ciara You are right!
@Ciara The moderation aspect is a whole other giant issue. https://medium.com/@seanbonner/taking-a-ride-on-mastodon-4fe0c6e60e04
